A medical device that appears to work normally is not necessarily accurate. A blood pressure monitor that deviates by a few mmHg or an infusion pump that drifts from its set rate can directly affect patient safety. This is where calibration comes in.
What Is Calibration?
Calibration is the process of comparing a device’s measurement results against a traceable reference standard, then ensuring the deviation stays within allowed limits. The result is documented in a calibration certificate.
Why Calibration Matters
- Patient safety — clinical decisions depend on accurate numbers.
- Regulatory & accreditation compliance — a valid calibration certificate is mandatory evidence (see MFK 7).
- Efficiency — calibrated equipment works optimally and lasts longer.
Which Devices Need Calibration?
Almost all measuring and therapy devices, including:
- Blood pressure monitors & patient monitors
- Infusion pumps & syringe pumps
- Ventilators & anesthesia machines
- Infant & adult scales
- Incubators & infant warmers
- Defibrillators
When Should It Be Done?
Generally at least once a year, or more often for critical devices, after major repairs, or whenever a deviation is suspected.
